Ponzio Arts Center Opening

Ponzio Arts Center Opening

Ponzio Arts Center at Colorado Academy‘s opening ceremonies were last week.  Here are some photos taken during the opening, and links to articles about the spaces.

“Indeed, this new center for the Visual Arts boasts beautiful lines and well-designed studios with windows that look out on our world at CA, as well as flexible spaces that serve our present needs and look towards future creative endeavors and programmatic growth. It has a dedicated gallery space for our students’ shows as well as for bringing in guest artists to place works in residence. Children will think this is normal. It is simply their art building.”

Architect and CA parent Andy Rockmore says, “Art studios should… be expansive spaces, places to dream, and to think big, and to think creatively, not linearly.” Rockmore says he and his colleagues decided to create the new spaces, “and then use the existing building to be the artist’s art box. Keep all your tools, all your materials, all the offices, the bathrooms, all of the things that it takes to support those new studios in the old building, and then they can work together. And it’s really worked out very well.”

“First we entered the main floor, and before I could stop the dramatic gasp from escaping my lips, it tumbled right out.  I can’t tell you a single source for my surprise, rather, the overall ethereal quality of the space was unexpected, and simply took my breath away.”
