Wynkoop Crossing

As part of the first phase of the KSE Ball Arena Redevelopment, Wynkoop Crossing will connect Denver’s historic Lower Downtown district to the emerging mixed-use neighborhood surrounding Ball Arena, helping transform a formerly disconnected edge of downtown into a vibrant, accessible urban corridor. Positioned at the nexus of local, district, and regional connections, the bridge plays a critical role in realizing the broader vision for the redevelopment: stitching together neighborhoods, enhancing multimodal mobility, and creating a more livable, inclusive downtown experience centered around people rather than vehicles.
Designed as a culmination of contextually responsive and site-specific conditions, Wynkoop Crossing carefully addresses the flow of pedestrian, bicycle, and multimodal traffic while accommodating both current and future needs for universal access and connectivity. The bridge and surrounding landscape share a unified design language that is finely tuned to integrate with the character of the surrounding city fabric, responding to important historic landmarks while supporting the evolution of the neighborhood around it. Structural, pedestrian, landscape, and lighting elements have been thoughtfully integrated to prioritize safety, comfort, and experience while creating a memorable civic connection across Speer Boulevard.
The site serves as a transition between the historic materiality and scale of Lower Downtown and the contemporary mixed-use development emerging around Ball Arena. Drawing inspiration from Wynkoop Street and Denver’s historic streetscapes, the landscape design incorporates Colorado Red sandstone reminiscent of the city’s iconic flagstone sidewalks, anchoring the bridge structure to the site below. Concrete seat walls, planted areas, and gathering spaces create opportunities to pause and connect while providing refuge from circulation routes. As part of a redevelopment effort that will dedicate approximately 10 acres to open space and improved public realm connections, Wynkoop Crossing helps establish the framework for a more connected, walkable, and vibrant downtown Denver.
