Undercroft

SAR+ teamed up with a branding and identity consultant, FODA Design, to complete the renovation of a 1904 Gothic Revival church in Northwest Arkansas, transforming it into a multi-level dining experience. The resulting restaurant located in the sanctuary space is simple yet refined, and graced with ample natural light. Rooted below the sanctuary space is the Undercroft, where the naming and design concept was developed to quite literally carry the weight of the church above. It is intentionally dark, moody, and tucked away. Exposed structural beams tie back to the Gothic revival style of the church. All materials were selected to be hefty and a little cool to the touch, like the steel bar top. Seven steel vitrine cases lined with brass are one of the few pops of light in the space and are used as the liquor displays. Custom designed furniture and banquettes are purposefully heavy, over scaled, and carry visual weight. The Undercroft is a bit of a surprise and is in total contrast to the light, airy sanctuary above.
