Shears Adkins Rockmore was the Architect responsible for designing and organizing the client’s vision of a new model for sustainable urban residential living in downtown Boulder. An internal courtyard provides abundant natural light and ventilation to all units, many on both the front and back of the unit. Re-using the existing structure, previously an office building, appropriate solar shading, and utilizing recyclable and locally procured materials throughout all played a part in achieving a LEED Silver certification.
While implementing a central courtyard provided tremendous value to the residents, it also significantly increased the density on the street in the existing single family home neighborhood. This resulted in a very difficult entitlement. With a diplomatic and delicate approach, this project ameliorates the neighborhood’s concerns and achieves our client’s vision. It is widely recognized as a successful example of appropriately integrating a relatively dense residential project into an existing urban neighborhood.
