Danae Filpula Ankney joined SAR+ in 2025, bringing a background in high-end, single family residential design from her home state of Montana. Growing up in the mountain west has provided Danae with a unique perspective on the importance of thoughtful, empathetic design that also respects the beautiful natural environments that surround us. Currently engaged in larger-scale projects at SAR+, she is eager to expand her expertise by designing spaces that foster community and contribute to the evolving character of Denver.

Danae holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design and a Master of Arts in Architecture from Montana State University. Throughout her education and early professional experience she developed a strong appreciation for the ability of architectural design to bring people together and create meaningful connections. This is a perspective she plans to bring to her work at SAR+.

Outside of architecture you can find Danae spending time in the mountains, racing sailboats, or exploring the music and food scene of Denver.

We sat down with Danae for a quick Q&A to learn a little more about what inspires her, what she’s working on, and what makes her tick. Here’s what she had to say.

INSIDE THE STUDIO:
Meet Danae

Q: What’s your role at SAR+?

A: Architectural Designer

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Laurel, MT

Q: What first pulled you toward architecture?

A: I chose architecture because it allows me to be creative while also using the logical side of my brain. I found my passion in architecture through the way that design can positively impact people in their everyday lives.

Q: What are you working on at SAR+ right now that you’re most excited about?

A: The multifamily residential building that I have been working on for the past year is going under construction soon, so I am looking forward to doing lots of site visits and watching it go up!

Q: Describe your design style or approach in three words.

A: Collaborative, Intentional, People-centered.

Q: Best piece of advice you’ve ever received (work-related or otherwise)?

A: Be confident in speaking about your work because you are the person who knows the most about what you have drawn.

Q: Favorite place you’ve traveled, or a trip still high on your wish list?

A: High on my wish list is sailing in Greece

Q: What was your very first job?

A: Working at a k-5 daycare

Q: If you weren’t in architecture or design, what would you be doing instead?

A: I would be a custom furniture design-builder ideally based in a woodshop in the middle of the mountains. If I had to be out of design entirely I would probably have a series of seasonal jobs with the main intent of enjoying the cool places I get to work in.

Q: What’s always on your desk or in your bag?

A: Lip Balm and Hand Lotion, Necessities in Colorado!

Q: If you could only eat one type of food forever, what’s the pick?

A: Mediterranean

Q: Your coffee order, exactly as you’d say it at the counter.

A: Hot Oatmilk Vanilla Latte

Q: Morning person or night owl?

A: Morning person

Q: Your current obsession.
